Harris Tunstal, July 12, 1885

Oxford, Lafayette County, Mississippi

On July 12, 1885, a white mob kidnapped Harris Tunstal (maybe Harrison Tunstall) from jail and hanged him behind the Methodist Episcopal Church near the Oxford square. Documents account, “An attempt to commit a nameless crime on one of our most highly respected young ladies.”  “This is the first person mobbed and second hanging…in [Lafayette] County.”
